saying their budgets are going to be cut. then the pentagon came out the next day and said we're going to have to lay off 800,000 civilian workers or furlough them one day a week. yesterday you had lahood, the transportation secretary come to the white house briefing room and say we're going to have delays in air traffic, shut down air traffic control. this tactic is because the white house recognizes they're trying to sway public opinion and put pressure from the outside on republicans. it's interesting. a poll came out just this week that said the vast majority of americans don't know a lot about these cuts that are coming down. the white house is trying to change that. the white house is still working, hoping for a deal. but i get a sense that most of washington and probably even at the white house they recognize we could go past the sequester at least for a few weeks, and there's going to be another chance late in march where the continuing spending resolution comes up or expires and they're going to have to negotiate deal on that. and it all could just be wrapped up into one. >> d

to make cuts that are coherent than at the level of the entire pentagon. the more discretion you give the white house, the easier these cuts might go. so senator republicans of that said, we're willing to give you that discretion. house republicans are gearing up to pass legislation along those lines as well. the thing is that senate democrats are not going to go along with it and the president doesn't want to go along with it. if the president has that discretion to see to it those cults don't have such disastrous effects then the president actually owns the cuts that he actually has to make. so partly there's a pass the buck dynamic going on here as well. >> let me jump through this quickly on one quick question. if, in fact, this does not -- the sequester comes through and the economy gets into trouble, next year we go to the midterm votes, do you think voters will look back and say, it was the republicans' fault? or do you think by then it will be the usual equation of, you're the party in charge, democrats, the economy's failing again, it's your fault, you pay? what do you think?

at the pentagon, chuck hagel, and then john brennan, his pick for the cia. obviously the benghazi matter is an obstacle for chuck hagel's confirmation and vote there in congress and then this john brennan matter is very important to the issue of these targeted drone strikes, rand paul, the senator from kentucky has said that he is willing to hold up that vote on john brennan. if he doesn't receive assurances from the white house that the united states will not target any drone strikes on americans on american soil. so some of this information i think the administration is hoping will at least for now satisfy some of those members with these concerns, wolf. >> it's going to be a tough battle, i take it. both of these confirmations likely to go through next week. but it's by no means a done deal, is it? >> reporter: it's not a -- especially when you have senators saying they may hold up nominees and so we're going to have to wait and see whether or not senator paul is satisfied with the information that he's getting from the white house. but this is perhaps, you know, a break in an impasse
